OOPS!

I recently experienced a banking incident that prompts this departure from my political posts. Last week, when using on-line bill-pay, I ordered a check in the amount of $132.43 be sent for a payment on my property taxes. The intended recipient called me after receiving my check indicating that the check was actually in the amount of $13,243.00. OOPS! Since I only had about $200.00 in my account I advised the recipient of the error and contacted my bank expecting that the check would be refused NSF. OOPS! Check was paid. I won’t go into all of the details but the upshot was that this should have been prevented by the SYSTEM. This led me to wonder about this so-called system that is supposed to make everything work smoothly. Perhaps the first recorded system failure involved dinosaurs. Did Noah or someone else on the ark fail to include a pair of brontosaurus, or tyrannosaurus, or stegosaurus among the animals saved from the flood? Is a system failure the cause of dinosaur extinction? There are certainly other examples of system failures that have occurred since the ark landed. Recent ones might include the fuckup (sorry if the word offends, but there is not another euphemism strong enough) (actually that is a topic for future post!)better known as Katrina, yesterday’s news about the hacking on the part of Anonymous, and all of the other events that have not gone as planned and have been blamed on THE SYSTEM. Just who or what is THE SYSTEM that is supposed to prevent these occurrences? Is THE SYSTEM a person, place, or thing? How does it work or better said, supposed to work? Should we be looking at a better way of preventing fuckups (I know, that word again!)? It seems that the best that can be offered is OOPS. Hopefully at some point in the near future there will appear better solutions. At the very least, perhaps the future will show us just who or what THE SYSTEM actually is.
