What Did He Really Mean?

What was Romney saying when he mistakenly tried to infer that today’s navy is weaker than the navy in 1916.  In the last Presidential debate, when Romney said the navy has fewer ships today then in 1916, President Obama answered by saying Romney does not understand the American military and pointed out that the military also has fewer bayonets and horses.  While this should have answered Romney, the real question is just what was Romney saying.  One might think Romney is worried about protecting his investments in other countries that might be threatened by a weakened military.  Of course, Romney, like many of the wealthy with off-shore investments want the US government to protect those investments and use military action if they deem that necessary protection, but apparently Romney and most of the other 1% want taxpayers other than themselves to pick up the tab to protect their foreign interests.  They do not want their taxes to be raised to pay the increased costs they deem necessary for military security. In fact, while calling for increased military spending Romney and the 1% also called for a 20% across the board tax cut.  Unfortunately, many Americans in the middle class, who have seen their jobs flow out of the country, and not seen their income or wealth keep up with inflation voted to support the policies of Romney and the 1%.  It is past time when taxes on the wealthy are returned to the level when there was growth at all levels in this country.  Romney lacked the courage to try to be elected by promising to have a tax policy that would raise taxes to the level of his hoped-for spending.  He also lacked the courage of any conviction to be Commander-in-Chief.  There is more to governing than cutting taxes.  It is too bad that the Republican party fails to realize that.
