Going back to the Presidency of Ronald Reagan, Republicans
have claimed that their policies of lowering taxes would reduce deficits and
produce more revenue. However, under
Reagan, the debt increased by $1,873 billion dollars and the revenue as a
percentage of GDP actually shrank.
Under Bush 41, the debt increased by $1,483 billion dollars and the
revenue continued to shrink as a percentage of GDP. Then, along came Bush 43 who managed to increase the debt by
$6,106 billion dollars and reduced revenue as a percentage of GDP to an
historic low. The last Republican
administration was responsible for the largest economic downturn since the
Great Depression and as a result of these policies ended up with over 20
million people losing their jobs. Now,
four years later, along comes Mitt Romney, hiring many of the same advisers
that were in the Bush White House and he makes the same claim that the
Republicans before him made...lower taxes and the world will be a better
place. While he claims to be a job
creator, his record in Massachusetts as governor says otherwise as during his
term in office his state went from 36th (out of 50) to 47th
(also out of 50). While he claims to
have reduced expenditures the actual facts prove otherwise and while he did not
raise taxes, he raised revenue by increasing fees on virtually everything the
Commonwealth of Massachusetts provided to citizens. To show you just how the former constituents of Romney felt about
his competency to be the President, in the Presidential primary, Obama received
511,680 votes compared to 255,892 for Romney and Romney lost to Obama in the 2012 Massachusetts election by over
10 points .
Seeing as how the citizens of Massachusetts have experienced four years
of both, they, better than anyone had a feeling for the most competent between
Romney and Obama. Romney would have
been bad for the country regardless of whether we are referring to the moderate
Romney, the conservative Romney, or the seriously conservative Romney. The Romney/Ryan administration would have
set back women’s health issues 50 years while continuing to destroy the middle
class in order to continue to enrich the wealthiest 1%. Needless to say,
Republican pundits will find something other than the actual facts to opine the
reasons for Obama’s victory. Their
failure to look to history is all the reason needed to explain the Republican
losses in the 2012 election.
Unfortunately, Republicans do not believe elections have consequences
and will most likely continue to obstruct and block any legislation necessary
to reverse the depressing effects of low tax, less regulation policies. Hopefully, Senate democrats are wise to the
tactics of republicans like Mitch McConnell and will make changes in the Senate
rules that wil prevent an onslaught of filibusters going forward.
