More Guns

Wayne LaPierre, of the NRA, offered the gun industry solution to prevent gun violence from happening in the future.  His organization’s solution was to have armed police in each and every school.  He apparently missed the notice that there was armed security personnel in the Colorado school which failed to prevent the Columbine disaster.  He also overlooked the Virginia Tech shootings where armed campus police were unable to prevent that shooter from multiple killings.  Wayne must not read very much about gun tragedies or else he would have read about the Arizona killings where an armed person was at the scene but did not use his weapon because fortunately he had the sense to realize that he could not have taken a shot at the shooter in that instance without the chance of hitting an innocent bystander.  More guns are only the answer if you represent the gun industry which profits from the sales of more guns.  If Wayne was a true representative of the firearms industry he would have suggest that the only real solution would be to equip every desk in every school with a gun.  Instead of recess in kindergarten and primary grades, students can go to a gun range (replacing the gym and playgrounds) and practice marksmanship.  Kindergarten and first grades can begin with single shot .22 caliber pistols.  Grades 2 – 6 can move up to .32 caliber revolvers.  By the time children are ready for middle school, small bore shot-guns can be part of the curriculum.  Once in high school, military grade weapons can be introduced starting with semi-automatic pistols and by the 12th grade, full bore assault weapons.  Unfortunately, that will not prevent shootings in the supermarket parking lots, but that can be fixed by arming the grocery bag buys and the people who retrieve the grocery carts from the parking lots.  Wayne, if you are going to offer solutions to put an end to gun violence, get real and lobby Congress to enact legislation that everyone has to own and carry a firearm. After all, arming the good guys with guns worked so well in Newtown, Aurora, Virginia Tech, and Columbine.
