Eliminate All Laws

In typical Republican logic, S. E. Culp explained that no changes in gun laws would stop every massacre from happening in the future.  She opined that tighter gun controls in general and background checks on all gun and ammunition purchases would not stop all who would use guns to massacre innocents.  While in a sense she is correct in that no law prevents all violations the purpose of all laws is to minimize undesirable acts and provide penalties for those who actually commit undesirable acts and are caught.  According to her logic we should do away with any laws regarding illegal immigration since they have not prevented undocumented individuals from entering the country.  Do away with speeding offenses since there are people on the roads every day who exceed the speed limit.  Repeal all laws that provide penalties for tax cheats since, in spite of these laws, people still cheat on their income taxes.  One might question the world in which S.E. Culp dwells.  In a real world, no law actually prevents an unwanted event but does make it more difficult to commit unwanted activities and provides penalties for those caught violating those laws.  While background checks would not have prevented the Sandy Hook shooter from stealing his mother’s guns there is little doubt that preventing the use of high capacity magazines would have minimized the damage caused.  When it comes to guns, to say that more guns will minimize gun violence is the same as saying more fucking will minimize unwanted pregnancies.
