Senator Vitter sponsored an amendment to the Farm Bill that would prevent convicted felons from ever receiving food stamps even after service their sentences. Interestingly, there was nothing in the amendment that prevents farmers who may have criminal records of receiving government farm subsidies. One has to wonder from what part of one’s anatomy Senators pull some of their legislative policies. Why is it permissible for a farmer with a criminal record to receive farm subsidies but a person who is poor with a past criminal record cannot get food stamps to feed his or her children. Since when do we punish the children for the crimes committed by their parents? At last check, only North Korea punished the family for crimes of the parents and grandparents. Perhaps Vitter wants to turn Louisiana into North Korea.
