In spite of the many damages caused the country by the Presidency of Donald Trump there are lessons to be learned. The very first lesson is good government requires political experience. The idea that a “successful” businessman with a history of never before holding elected office can successfully runs the country was proven to be totally false with the incompetency of Donald Trump. There are those with presidential aspirations who will claim this failure was totally related to Trump’s personality but the lack of necessary political experience was very apparent. The second lesson is the “gift of gab” will not necessarily lead to good government. While Trump’s ability to build a re-election base of over 70 million voters this ability was not one of competence in governing but of competence in conning millions of people. Like all “successful” con artists Trump retains the ability to convince many that black is white, cold is hot, and facts do not matter. While this skill is an asset in property development this is a skill that is limited to the solicitation of funds in the case of campaigning and property project creation but offers no benefit in bridging the political gaps that are an integral part of governing. The third lesson learned from the Trump Presidency is divisiveness does not get legislation passed by Congress. While there are some policies that can be put into place with Executive Orders much of successful governing requires bi-partisan activity on the part of Congress. Finally, to be successful, a president must be able to unite not divide the people. Donald Trump did succeed in both those in favor of Trump and those opposed to Trump willing to totally discount and ignore the other side. One reason this did not work is because the pro-Trump segment of the country was in the minority. And, because Trump’s policy of divide and conquer actually resulted in rejecting opposition voters from switching sides his reelection attempts failed. The real question for which answers will not be quick in forthcoming is whether American can learn not to repeat the mistake called Donald Trump, President of the United States of America.
