A significant percentage of Americans have been living in a dream world that was first created by Donald Reagan. This world began with what his ultimate vice-president, George H. W. Bush called Voodoo Economics. This belief, the claim that tax cuts have magical power and can solve all problems, has been ried and tried again but has never lived up to the claims. Tax cuts onl manage to reduce revenue and ultimately lead to job cuts. This fact about tax cut has been proven at both federal and state3 level of government. After all this time and multiple attempts nobody believes in that claim aside from a handful of charlatans and cranks, plus the entire Republican Party. Ronald Reagan’s famous dictum that the most terrifying words in English are “I’m from the government, and I’m here to help” was intended to discourage any form of government assistance to the needy. What was left unsaid is when applied to help for that not in need the government has more than helped the wealthy grow richer while keeping the less wealthy under an economic leash. Yet, even in a time when tens of millions of jobs and entire industries have been severely impacted by the Covid-19 virus and the necessary measures to try to limit the spread of the virus politicians and economists keep insisting, in the teeth of the evidence, that aid to unemployed workers actually caused unemployment, by making workers unwilling to accept job offers. Their solution to help those whose jobs were shut down because of the pandemic, payroll tax cuts. Are not those politicians and economics aware that individuals who lost their jobs have no payroll and already do not pay payroll taxes? Is it some great economic secret that a tax that is based upon a percentage of one’s pay requires one to be paid to begin with? The most pressing issue yet to be answered is when (and perhaps even if) Americans will realize that in many cases the only source of help is government. And, when and if will Americans also realize the difference between good government and incompetent government. Finally, if America has not yet awakened to the realization that there is a very much needed place for GOOD government and GOOD government requires experience in government not in business.
