It’s Not Just Trump

While most will blame the rioting and destruction that took place in the U.S. Capital on Wednesday, January 6th on President Donald Trump it is easy to overlook the role of the Republicans in the Senate that failed to impeach Trump when they had the opportunity.  It is also easy to forget the extent to which Republican Senators like Ted Cruz and Josh Hawley acted to encourage the actions of the rioting Trump supporters.  Sadly there was but one Republican Senator that had the intelligence and the guts to speak outSen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) put the blame for the chaos unfolding in the Capitol on Wednesday firmly on the shoulders of his Republican colleagues: "This is what you've gotten, guys," Romney was heard yelling as "mayhem unfolded in the Senate chamber, apparently addressing his colleagues who were leading the charge to press Mr. Trump's false claims of a stolen election," The New York Times reports.  Protesters breached the Capitol on Wednesday afternoon, flooding the building and breaking into both chambers of Congress, sending lawmakers into terrified lockdowns. Sheltering with some members of the press, Romney reportedly called over Jonathan Martin of the Times to make it known, "This is what the president has caused today, this insurrection.  This issue also lies at the feet of the 125 Congressional Representatives that continued to foment revolution by claiming to accept the Trump lies of election fraud as fact in spite of no evidence supporting idiotic claims.  None of these supporters deserve their elected offices.  If not removed by Congress they surely should be rejected by voters in any future election.  It was not just Trump.  Trump did what he could get away with doing.  It was those Trump-supporting members of Congress, Senators and Representatives that permitted him to act as he did.  They all are equally responsible and they all should be removed from any elected positions.
