Why Trump?

What was it about Trump that caused voters to elect him President?  At his rallies, Trump voters cheered. They sent him to Washington to break noses and took the squeals of the DC establishment as proof it was being done. In Texas, a young woman described fears her Latin American partner would be deported as he did not have legal papers to stay. Then she said they had both voted for Mr Trump, given their Christianity and his anti-abortion stance. In Pennsylvania, an owner of a street lighting company described how his grandfather and father - who ran the business before him - were dyed-in-the-wool Democrats. Yet he was all-in for Mr Trump, seeing something heroic in his battle to bring back industrial jobs. In Iowa, a soybean farmer with a limp admitted fears of bankruptcy from the plunging soybean price. He knew Mr Trump’s China tariff war was the cause but supported him nonetheless; believing Beijing had got away with it for too long. What was it Trump supporters ssw in him? How did he forged such a deep and powerful bond?  Clearly his business outsider status was a huge aspect - the thing mentioned most frequently by the Trump faithful. Mr Trump had become the embodiment of American corporate success. It was less his riches - many surpassed him there - but the business whizz image he had projected for decades and which became hard-wired into the US conscience via The Apprentice. Beyond the ‘America’s CEO’ appeal there were other powerful forces. His nativism connected with those who saw immigration threatening their way of life. His trade wars were cheered by those stripped of jobs and status by globalization.  But the reality is Trump was just being Trump.  He did nothing different in his Presidency than he did in his business.  Trump was the consummate con man.  He perfected the ability to sell himself and to create an image of success that had no semblance to reality.  The Trump Presidency was no different from the Trump businessman...all promises and little performance.  Just as Trump built his “casino empire” on a mirage he presided as a mirage.  Trump has never taken responsibility for his failures not has he even admitted to his many failures.  Whether the casino, Trump Air, Trump Steaks, Trump Chicago...all were businesses that required management skills that Trump totally lacked. His many business failures were hidden as a result of his appearance on the Apprentice and never brought to light otherwise.  Whether it was selling a Trump development or selling a Presidential campaign Trump sold himself and never let facts get in the way of his sales pitch. But, once the deal was closed Trump lost interest and always moved on to the next deal.  He tried to govern the same way and in the same way he failed in business he failed in government.  Trump will never admit he lost his bid for re-election just as he has never admitted to his business reversals.  If nothing else was learned from the Trump years in office America should finally realize that there is a requirement for experience and skill in the job of President and asking someone lacking in that experience and without the necessary skill is asking for failure.
