What sane, career-minded politician could object? That is a question needed asked to each and every Republican Senator and Representative objecting to the Covid-19 Rescue bill. Already, in the House of Representatives, every Republican voted against this bill before it was sent to the Senate. Now the measure returns to the House for a final Vote tomorrow and one can be certain it will pass without a single Republican vote. This is the Republican Party whose leadership complained about a lack of bi-partisanship. What better evidence do Democrats have to justify eliminating the filibuster and removing the last method Republicans have to derail the Biden policies? If there was real intent for bi-partisanship a few members of the House and Senate cold have voted for the measure for no other reason than to demonstrate bi-partisan intent. After all, what political price would a Representative or Senator pay in a future election by voting to support a measure that has polled with 62% of likely voters saying the notion of passing a $1.9 trillion relief bill ASAP to fund vaccinations, $1,400 direct payments to most Americans, expanded unemployment benefits and a higher minimum wage aligned most closely with their view. They included 80% of Democrats, 56% of independents and 47% of Republicans. Furthermore, much of the benefits of this measure will actually flow to the cash registers of Republican businesses. You can be certain that WalMart will receive a sizeable share of the $1,400 rescue payment that will be received by every household with earnings less than $80,000 per year. And, who will be the recipient of the child benefit of $300 per child? This is a mold-breaking plan that is a day away from congressional passage, to provide most parents a monthly check of up to $300 per child. Obscured by other parts of President Biden’s $1.9 trillion stimulus package, which won Senate approval on Saturday, the child benefit has the makings of a policy revolution. Though framed in technocratic terms as an expansion of an existing tax credit, it is essentially a guaranteed income for families with children, akin to children’s allowances that are common in other rich countries. Again, like the rescue allowance of $1,400, this will only go to individuals earning less than $80,000 per year and a good portion of the monthly child benefit will find its way into cash registers of Republican-owned businesses. It is amazing that a Senator like Manchin could not be more aware of the intention of Republicans led by Mitch McConnell. Its not like he wasn’t around during the time McConnell claimed his objective was to make Obama a one term President, not to serve his country. Kyrsten Sinema, only in the Senate since 2019 still should also have witnesses enough party-line Republicanism to know the idea of a bipartisan Congress is but a myth in the words of Republicans who have no intent in listening to the population or putting country ahead of party. Democrats have one tool remaining to advance the country out of the pit of party rule. RID THE SENATE OF THE FILIBUSTER!
