Jesus Said

While I am reluctant to throw sand in the gears of scripture consider this: 1.The language spoken when Jesus was living was Aramaic. At the time Jesus was living and for almost two centuries following his life, Aramaic was not a written language but only spoken. For that reason alone, there can be no certainty as what Jesus may have actually said. 2.The Aramaic language has no letter in the limited (22 letters) alphabet for the sound of the letter J. The name Jesus (and the name Joseph) could not have existed at the time they were said to be living. Without a letter J there could be no Jesus. Actually the name Jesus was supplied by Greek theologians who first wrote what has become much of the New Testament of the Bible. I know this will also come as a shock to many but neither Jesus (or what ever he was called when living), Joseph (same name problem, no J), nor Mary were Christians. In the words of Sherlock Holmes, “It is a big mistake to theorize before one has data – because one begins to twist facts to suit theories instead of finding theories to suit facts.” As it turns out, archaeologists have uncovered tombs of 71 people said to have the same name as the man now known as Jesus who died around the same time Jesus was said to have died. His “biblical” name also appears 30 times in the Old Testament and refers to four separate characters. Since no one reading this post was around in first-century Galilee the logical thing seems to question the phrase, “Jesus said”.
