This is the voice of a former Eisenhower Republican who presently is witnessing the destruction of the middle class because of today's Republican politics and policies. Today, ideology trumps reality and practicality. The time has come for humans to take back the castles from the corporations. Comments are welcome, by the way.

Taxes?
Many people have written letters to the editor complaining that 47% of people filing tax returns do not pay any federal income tax. From the tone of these letters it is apparent the writers are certain that the non-payers are all on welfare, receiving food stamps, or recipients of the earned income tax credit. Many have alluded to a family earning $80,000 a year but with enough dependents to offset any tax liability. No one, repeat, no one has mentioned the 1479 returns with income over $1,000,000 that had no tax liability. Apparently in the minds of those upset at the 47%, it is only an issue if you are poor. If you are in the top 2% of income earners not paying a fair share of income tax is not a problem. Romney is a good example of someone who has taken advantage of our present tax laws to minimize his tax obligations. It is estimated that Romney has saved over $61 million dollars by not receiving wages or salaries but “carried interest”. To make matters even worse, Romney’s tax plan, if elected, will result in him paying virtually no federal income tax since his proposal would exempt capital gains, carried interest, and dividends from income tax as well as eliminating the tax on inheritance. His tax proposals, while lowering the tax on millionaires and billionaires would actually increase the taxes on the poorest Americans. Putting Romney’s tax situation in perspective, the last budget cut $74 million dollars from the FBI so Romney could save $61 million dollars in tax liability. Romney wants you to pay his salary as president, but does not want to pay his share of the costs of government. Do we need a president who thinks like this?
