Same Sex Marriage

Opponents of same sex marriage use the argument that the purpose of marriage is stable family relationships and raising children. While there is no disagreement that a so-called “normal” relationship between a man and a woman has potential for raising “normal” children, the assumption that all relationships between a man and a woman are either normal or successful is not valid. Many man-woman marriages are, to say the least, very rocky and are not the best environment for child rearing. In those cases there does not appear to be an outcry from those opposing same sex marriage. Additionally, where is the outcry for marriage between seniors who have no intention of procreating? If the purpose of marriage is procreation, why allow late-in-life marriages where there will be no procreation. Finally, there is the issue of sex. Believe it or not, many people enter into a marriage expecting the benefit of a pleasurable sexual experience. This is true whether the marriage involves a same sex or opposite sex couple. While many opposed to same sex marriage appear to also be opposed for sex for any reason other than procreation, those oppositionists are not advocating opposition to marriages where pleasurable sex is the bond that ties together the relationship. For many people, sex is a pleasurable experience. It might even be argued that sexual pleasure is a feature that was designed into the creature known as human. After all, if the creator did not want sex to feel good an orgasm would have the same result as a toothache. So, when faced with those opposing same sex marriage ask about marriage between the elderly. Ask them why they are in opposition. And, finally, remind them that they neither have to attend a wedding of a same sex couple nor buy the couple a wedding present therefore, how are they personally harmed by marriage of people totally unrelated to them.
