Government by Obstruction

Government by obstruction is not governing. Since the election of Barack Obama, the Republican party has demonstrated a complete inability to act as the minority party. Republicans have been fixated on preventing President Obama from being a two term president and Senate Republicans have filibustered virtually every piece of legislation that the President proposed. Over the last two years, Democrats broke more filibusters than any Senate in recorded history. In fact the only other Senate that comes close was the last Senate, right after the GOP lost its controlling majority on the Hill. The result of record filibusters is the need for a majority of 60 votes to pass any legislation in the Senate when the actual majority of votes in the Senate shold be 51 votes. If the expression sore losers comes to mind one would not be far from wrong. After the losses in the 2008 election, and in spite of the reversals in the 2010, midterm elections, Mitch McConnell, the Republican Senate Leader, has made his mission the prevention of passage of any legislation that might make the Obama Presidency appear successful. Going forward, it does not appear that Republicans have any interest in eliminating unemployment, reducing the deficit, or any other measures that might result in voted for an Obama second term. The Republicans refuse to recognize that "just say no" does not work when it comes to either preventing drug use, preventing unwanted pregnancies, or governing. The Republican party that caused the greatest recession since the “great depression” is determined to do everything possible to prevent recovery until President Obama is out of office. This is not governing, this is obstruction and the Republicans should have to pay the price for their incompetence.
