What is the role of Senators? One would hope that the people elected to
serve in the Senate would be focused on governing. To the contrary, it appears that those members of the Republican
party have confused obstruction with governing. Having set records for the number of filibusters, the Republicans
in the Senate, led by McConnell, have obviously no intention of doing anything
that resembles governing. In the past,
the minority party would give the majority party the opportunity to put their
policies into place and give the minority party an opportunity to prove the
majority wrong and win elections by pointing out the errors of the majority’s
ways. Today’s Republican minority party
lives by the Nancy Reagan, “just say no” approach which is anything but
governing. Granted there are
philosophical differences when it comes to what is best for the country, but
the country has spend the past eleven years under the low tax/less regulation
Republican approach and has yet to recover from the Bush recession. What makes the matter even worse is the fact
that under Reagan, Clinton, Bush 41, and Bush 43, government growth and
increased government spending helped reverse economic downturns. Yet, since the inauguration of Obama,
Republicans have done everything within their power to suppress government
spending which has had the effect of making the recovery from the Bush
recession far slower. Most economists
maintain that we have yet to see Obama economic policies. Today’s economy and the economy for the past
has been stymied by Republican obstruction.
It is past time for the Senate to put aside the filibuster and begin
their job of governing.
