“America is
suffering through an economic calamity of truly historic dimensions," said
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky. However, what he failed to
say was the very facts that first of all, Republican policies caused the
economic calamity to which he refers.
Mitch also failed to say that the recovery was slowed as a result of the
barrage of filibusters on the part of his republican party that prevented any
measures that might have sped up the recovery from ever coming to a vote. Finally, McConnell fails to note that the
very policies that caused the economic calamity to which he alludes are the
policies advocated by Romney and Ryan.
These policies did not work when attempted by the Bush 43 administration
and there is no evidence these policies will have different results if applied
by Romney/Ryan. As far as fixing
Medicare, on thing to help put this program on sound financial footing would be
measures that would ensure that people like Romney and Ryan paid a Medicare tax
based upon their entire income like a teacher or a cop. It is questionable whether or not Romney
paid any Medicare tax at all as well as whether Ryan paid a Medicare tax on his
entire income. Far too many people in
the top 10% of earnings pay little or no payroll taxes. This is the “economic
calamity” that needs stopped. One
result of the republican efforts to prevent Obama from being elected to a
second term is the high rate of unemployment of state workers and teachers, in
the main. This is particularly ironic
considering the number of times speakers at the RNC convention talked about the
need to raise the level of education.
While the republicans talk about the need for better education, states
led by republican governors have been laying off and reducing teaching
staffs. What republicans do given the
opportunity to govern is far more important than what they claim they intend to
do. One only has to look at the history
of republican administrations to see the tremendous gap between word and
deed. The economic calamity referred to
by McConnell is guaranteed if Romney/Ryan are elected.
