The Gap

Romney frequently refers to the gap between what Barack Obama promised and what he actually delivered.  Taking a closer look at gaps would find one looking at the gap resulting from eight years of Republican policies that preceded Obama’s first term.  To begin with, we can see a gap between the most powerful military force in the world and the longest war in American history.  While the Republican administration of Bush could brag about the military power and competency, when led by a Republican Commander–in-Chief, the American military was not able to either end the war in Afghanistan, the longest war in the country’s history nor kill/capture Osama bin Laden, the instigator of the worst attack on the American mainland.  There was anther gap between the Republican administration’s promise to create jobs and the actual job creation record.  The job creation record of the Republican/Bush 43 administration was the worst since World War II and the job creation of the first three years of the present Obama administration was almost twice that of the eight years under the Republicans.  There is also a gap between the promised growth of the middle class and the greatest inequality in modern times between the top 1% and the rest of Americans, again a result of Republican policies.  The gap between the economic record of Republicans which is marked by the largest economic downturn since the great depression is another example of the differences between Republican promises and performance.  Finally, when Romney continues to talk about how government is in the way of American prosperity ask this question...Where would Romney be without the special tax favors he personally received from government or the various government benefits his company, Bain Capital, use to financial advantage.  Like most Republican rhetoric, government that benefits the wealthy, old, white men, the heart of Republican policy, is good and any government policy that favors anyone else is bad.  The country is no longer just made up of wealthy, old, white men.  Today, voters are also black, brown, yellow, young, middle aged, or female.  The country cannot afford another gap that will surely result from a repeat of the failed Republican policies that got us in the mess we’re still in, but recovering from.
