Recently there have
been ads on television for donations to the “Wounded Warriors
Organization”. This is a disgrace that
politicians of both parties have failed to enact legislation to take care of
this issue. Wounded warriors should
NEVER be dependent upon charity to help them transition to civilian life or
live with any disability they received in the service of our country. At a time when retired generals can receive
“consulting contracts” from the Pentagon and many former activities performed
by military personnel have been privatized, no one who ever served in uniform
should be forced to leave the service because of physical or psychological
injuries received while in the service of our country. There must be many jobs on domestic military
bases that could be filled by these individuals. In addition, there should be a requirement that any company
receiving a contract for product or service from the pentagon must employ
military personnel who have received injuries in the line of duty...say a
minimum of 5 people for every million dollars of contract for product or
service. This requirement should also
be required of any company that has taken over a service formerly performed by
a branch of the military. In addition, a surtax of 5% on the first $1,000,000 or taxes and 10% on taxes over $1,000,000 should be levied on every business that receives department of defense contracts. Those businesses that have profited from war should have to pay a greater share of the costs of war. It is bad
enough than many of our wounded warriors were injured because they were forced
to fight a war based upon misinformation on the part of political leaders or
were injured because they were not provided sufficient protective equipment for
the duties they were asked to perform.
Every time one of the television commercials is run asking for a
contribution to the wounded warriors fund we need to be reminded that we have a
Congress filled with legislators that would prefer to cut taxes for the
wealthiest of Americans and cut taxes for corporations rather than tax those
most able to afford to support those people who have been injured and
disfigured while serving their country (and protecting the interests of many of
the corporations that presently receive tax benefits). We must send people to Congress that will
prioritize this issue.
