Lately, BP has been running television advertisements
boasting of paying over $23 billion dollars to clean up the shores of the Gulf
of Mexico. This is nothing more than
corporate bullshit designed to hide the fact that BP along with other oil
companies have, for years, been stiffing the American consumer as well as
avoiding paying the expenses that arise through the use of their products. This is bullshit because the oil spill that
caused the damages to the Gulf of Mexico were caused by BP to begin with. Who was supposed to pay those costs if not
BP? Who was supposed to reimburse those
living on the shores of the Gulf and making their living from the waters of the
Gulf their losses because of the ineptitude and incompetency of BP? The real question that is never mentioned is
whether or not BP was allowed to deduct the cleanup expenditures before paying
corporate income taxes. If so, once
again, the American taxpayer has been suckered into subsidizing BP just as they
presently are forced to pay the costs of pollution caused by either the
refineries that produce the final products of BP or the costs to the
environment that are caused by the use of the products produced by BP. The reality is that by paying $23 billion dollars, BP probably got off
cheap. The other reality is that $23
billion dollars is a drop in the bucket when compared to the profits BP has
earned in the past and will earn in the future. American does not need further corporate bullshit. America needs corporations like BP to step
up, display good citizenship, and pay a fair share of taxes.
