In a television commercial recorded for a senatorial
candidate, Mitt Romney said he was endorsing Richard Murdock, who would be the
51st vote to overturn Obamacare.
Since when has a simple majority been sufficient to get legislation through
Congress? If it would only take 51
votges, there would have been a public option in Obamacare. With a 51 vote majority there probably would
not have been a mandate that everyone purchase insurance. Even more important, with a 51 vote
majority, 5 million more people would have jobs as a result of the 54 Senator
vote on the Omnibus Jobs Bill. But,
Mitt Romney must have slept through the part of his civics class where they
taught students about Senate rules and the filibuster. While this my not be known by Romney, it
takes 60 votes to quash a filibuster and therefore get legislation passed in
the Senate today. What is crazier, a
rule that prevents the majority in a House of Congress from enacting
legislation or a candidate for President who apparently is ignorant when it
comes to the workings of government.
Representative Cantor recently proposed legislation that he claimed
would by-pass the need for Senate approval to repeal the Affordable Healthcare
Act. Now Romney thinks he, as President, can repeal legislation passed by Congress or seems to think that with 51 votes that legislation will be
repealed. Before running for national
office Romney should learn how the government Romney claims to be able to
manage works. One other point...voters shold also know how government works before voting for representatives who, along with Romney, will say anything to try to get votes.
