The head of the NRA made a speech yesterday critical of President Obama’s Inaugural address. His rant, while filled with lies and misrepresentation, was typical of the NRA hypocrisy. This is an organization that claims to protect the interests of citizen gun owners while actually acting as a shill for the gun manufacturing industry. While the NRA voices claim to call for stronger enforcement of existing laws, this organization has done everything within its power to prevent enforcement of gun laws. The organization lobbied to prevent the CDC from studying the effects of guns on the health of Americans. The organization also sponsored legislation that prevents the monitoring of gun sales and that would prevent multiple purchases by gun runners. Blocking background checks at gun shows enables felons and others who should not own guns to make purchases. The majority of gun owners have voiced a need for more control over who may purchase and own a firearm but this need has always been opposed by the voices of the NRA. Finally, in the 2012 Election, it was shown that the NRA influence over the electoral process was less than 5% effective. In other words, the NRA candidates lost! The MRA claims four million members. It is past time when so few can speak for the majority of the people.
