What’s There To Gain?

What is there to gain by Mr. Trump’s attack on the American voting process?  Just how can he personally benefit by destroying the faith that people in both parties have historically shared in the outcome of elections.  Perhaps the most important question is how does this election turmoil benefit the Republican Party?  The Trump started his re-election campaign was a moment of truth for the Republican Party: Following the election the country is on a knife’s edge, with G.O.P. officials from state capitols to Congress choosing between the will of voters and the will of one man. In pushing his false claims to the limits, he has managed to f cowing Republicans into acquiescence or silence.  Mr. Trump has revealed the fragility of the electoral system — and shaken it. At this point, the president’s impact is not so much about overturning the election — both parties agree he has no real chance of doing that — but infusing the democratic process with so much mistrust and confusion that it ceases to function as it should.  Just how does this benefit Donald Trump?  In his own words, anyone who does not focus on building one’s own wealth is either a sucker or a loser, two of Trump’s favorite derogative labels.  So, what’s in it for The Donald?  How does he benefit?  He must have skin in this game because Trump does nothing that does not add to his bottom line.   What’s there to gain,  the great political mystery of 2020?
