More Unity

An even better example of what Republicans call unity than the theft of Obama’s Supreme Court nomination, the jamming through the confirmation of Amy Coney Barrett or the 218 of President Trump’s judicial nominees many of which were confirmed with far less than 60 Senate votes.  The Republican definition of unity is now and always has been a “my way or the highway” approach to governing.  This style of unity will continue the Republican pattern of substitution obstruction for governing and will do nothing to help the millions of Americans suffering the economic consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic.  Biden should make the Republicans an offer to come up with a minimum of ten Republican Senators who will vote to support his proposals.  He should give McConnell a period of three days to bring his people on board and should McConnell fall short of the 10 Biden should then turn to reconciliation.  Under no circumstances should Biden wait until March when the current rescue legislation expires.  To do so can only cause undo worry and stress where neither worry or stress is needed.  Biden has been in politics long enough to have learned it is far more instructive to watch what the opposition party does than to listen to the pronouncements of the opposition.  He has also been around long enough to have learned Republicans lie and misinform every opportunity they have if they think it will give them their desired end result.  Republicans cannot be trusted and if Biden has learned anything over his life in Congress he should have learned that lesson.  One can only hope Biden will direct Pelosi and Schumer to act accordingly.
