Senator Mitch McConnell was Senate Majority Leader from January e, 2015 until Jaguar 20, 2021... a total of 6 years. So in what way did McConnell demonstrate he planned any bipartisanship? Considering the fact that in his last year as Majority Leader 275 bills that have received at least support from one Republican remained sitting on McConnell’s desk. During the Obama Administration McConnell did everything within his power to cause the Obama Administration to fail. In the last Congress, before Democrats gained a majority in the Senate, there were 298 cloture votes intended to end a filibuster. It should be obvious that McConnell and fellow Republicans have every intention of once again abusing the filibuster to retain power over the Senate, in spite of the results of the 2020 election where Democrats tool over majority in the Senate. So what is there that makes anyone think there is a possibility of bipartisan votes on the latest legislation. Does anyone really believe there are 10 Republicans in the Senate who will vote to pass voting rights legislation? What tooth fairy will allow anyone to think Republicans will vote in favor of an infrastructure bill or vote in favor of granting a path to citizenship for Dreamers, let alone a bipartisan vote for immigration reform. Don’t forget the Biden Agenda also includes increases in taxes for corporations and the addition of more brackets with higher marginal rates at the top end of the tax brackets so what is the chances of bipartisanship on the part of Republicans for those measures. Then, there’s the years-long measures to close loopholes in gun legislation that hopefully will come to a vote. There is not a single Republican who would vote for changes in spite of polls showing a majority of people favor these and other measures. Republicans are beholden to a base that is shrinking every day and they totally lack the stones to do what is best for the country. The only solution is eliminating the filibuster or, at the least, requires the filibuster to force the objecting Senator to have to stand on the floor of the Senate and give his or her reasons for a no vote. The filibuster needs to become only a means of delaying a vote and allowing the minority views to be heard, and no longer a way to prevent a vote on legislation. Schumer needs to grow the stones to make this happen.
