If I Was President

If I was President, here is what I would say about the gay marriage issue: Throughout my life, I have looked to the Bible to guide me on many issues in my life. For the longest time, the Bible led me to oppose same sex marriage. While I personally cannot envision my being married to anyone other my wife, let alone being married to someone of the same sex as I, try as I may, I can find no other credible sources other than religious documents that suggest that same sex marriage poses threats to society or should be illegal. Further, as stated recently very eloquently by a state representative, the idea that I would support any legislation that would deprive anyone of the rights, privileges, and joys I have had from my marriage is not acceptable. Finally, neither my personal views or those views I hold that are grounded in religious beliefs or religious traditions should become the law of the land. The Constitution provides for separation of church and state and as President, I took an oath to uphold that Constitution. For that reason alone, the religious argument opposing same sex marriage should have no merit in discussions of the legality of a union of two individuals of the same sex. In addition, as President, I am not in office to see that my personal views become the law of the land but to try to be President for ALL Americans not just heterosexual Americans. Two individuals of the same sex making a commitment to live as a couple should be entitled to all of the rights, privileges and benefits as two people of opposite sex enjoy.
