Just what is the
Republican’s problem? Why didn’t
Republicans get a bigger boost from the convention and the addition of Paul
Ryan to the ticket. Perhaps a better
way to look at this question is to ask, what is right about the Romney Ryan
ticket. Before you accuse me of being a
card-carrying liberal, let me set things straight by saying that I have been an
Eisenhower Republican form most of my life.
Having said that, I will also confess to NEVER voting a straight party
ticket and also confess to having voted for Democrats, Independents, and
Libertarians in the past as well as voting for Republicans. As I see the problem, the only thing Romney
Ryan have going for them and their platform is the fact that they are neither
Democrats or Republicans. They will get the votes of Republicans who would
never vote for a Democrat, from others regardless of party affiliation who will
never vote for a black man, and finally from those who would never vote for
Obama. There are not enough of those
voters to elect Romney/Ryan, however.
In addition, both Romney and Ryan have a problem telling the truth. Most of their assertions have been proven to
be inaccurate to say the least and some have been called outright lies. Romney/Ryan have to convince thinking voters
that they will not repeat the mistakes of the Bush administration but their
economic policy statements echo the Bush/Cheney policies. Their claim that Obama’s policies are not working
are confronted with a record of 4.5 million jobs having been created and the
worst thing they can say is a monthly job report of 95,000 jobs was
disappointing. When that is compared
with the last republican administration that saw losses of 850,000 jobs a
month, the not-working description does not quite fit. In the area of foreign policy, one has to
compare the ending of the war in Iraq, the killing of bin Laden, the Libyan
situation, and the Arab Spring with the newspaper headlines of the foreign press
that followed Romney’s overseas trip and cataloged his daily gaffes. Finally, there’s the elephant in the room,
Medicare. Paul Ryan is synonymous with
“voucher care” which will cost the republicans senior votes. No matter how Romney/Ryan try to dodge this
bullet, replacing Medicare with a voucher system will not win elections. Finally, there’s the female vote. While Romney has yet to hold a position for
longer than he can hold his breath, Ryan is on record with siding with
anti-female extremists in Congress having co-sponsored legislation. Combine that with a Congress that has voted
over 30 times to repeal “Obamacare”, at least that many times to make abortion
more difficult, and also supported legislation invasive to women’s bodies and
you have a record that can only attract voters to the other party. Then, to make matters even worse, there are
the Republican state governors and state legislatures that have enacted some of
the most anti-female legislation since women won the right to vote. This is not to also bring to mind the
republican’s failed attempts to win a black vote by alluding to the welfare
issue and their failed attempt to win Latino votes by promising to veto the
DREAM act. Finally, there is the fact
that neither Romney or Ryan appear to be very likeable. So other than the fact that they cannot
campaign and are only successful at raising money combined with the reality
that historically Republicans have not been able to govern, balance the budget,
or create jobs, what’s wrong with the Romney/Ryan ticket??? Do you have to go
any further than the fact that is is Romney and Ryan and everything else is
just overkill? Hell, even Republicans
don’t like them and are only voting for them because they’re not Obama!
