Facts Worth Noting

  • Universal health care was first proposed by a republican president
  • The Dream Act was proposed first by Reagan after he signed a bill giving amnesty to illegal immigrants.
  • The idea of mandates requiring everyone to have health insurance was again first part of the original Eisenhower plan and lately by Senator Grassley, a republican
  • Cap and trade was a republican proposal to “securitize” emissions and create an market and exchange to buy and sell emissions
  • EPA legislation was signed into law by Nixon, a republican president
  • Congress raised the debt limit 78 times between 1960 and 2011, 49 times with a Republican President and 29 times when the President was a Democrat
  • On January 26, 2010 the Senate voted on a resolution to create an 18 member deficit-reduction task force,  Both John McCain and Mitch McConnell sponsored this resolution. The vote on the resolution failed with only 53 of the necessary 60 votes.  Voting against the resolution were McConnell, McCain, and 6 other co-sponsors, the first time in Senate history that co-sponsors killed their own bill.
