What is the possibility that Republicans do not want to win elections? Perhaps they recall the old film. “The Mouse That Roared” that was about a small country that learned that financially it paid to lose a war with the United States. Perhaps the poobahs in the Republican world of politics have learned that there is more money in losing than in winning. After all look at all that was spent by Adelson, Fries, and others of that ilk. Look at the money behind “Fix the Debt” as well as the CEOs who have lent their name to this charade. Then there is Simpson/Bowles, another scheme that, if successful will financially cripple Social Security and Medicare while lowering individual and corporate tax rates for their benefactors. Finally, perhaps the best evidence that Republicans do not want to win can be found in the invitees to next week’s CPAC conference. No one invited to speak is a winner. They are all losers of their last elections. What can they possibly say to the assembled Republican base. We lost because our policies suck? We lost because the majority of voters think we demonstrated our incompetence in governing the last time we held the Presidency? We lost because Americans prefer obstruction to actual governing? What can they possible say that is constructive? They cannot talk about how Republican economic policy has benefited the middle class. They will not be able to cite all of the jobs created by legislation they crafted. Can they claim their ability to manage the longest war in the nation’s history against the weakest enemy in history went so well? As long as Republicans continue to occupy the losing side, people like Carl Rove will keep their meal tickets. It should be obvious that Republicans have learned it is far more profitable to lose than to win.
